SILOAM SPRINGS The 2009-2010 JBU men’s basketball team got the season started on the right foot on Thursday night after blowing by Hillsdale Freewill Baptist Okla.) 96-67 in the annual Toilet Paper Game.
Senior Davaughn Jackson led the way with 18 points and five rebounds followed by freshman Coleson Rakestraw and sophomore Abel Galliguez with 17 each.
Juniors Ryland Allen and Andrius Mikutis rounded out the double digit scoring with 14 and10 points respectively.
Mikutis also had 12 boards for the doubledouble.
Hamid Dicko led Hillsdale (0-1) with 20 points on a 6-for-12 shooting night.
As a team, JBU shot 58 percent (35-60) from the floor including 53 percent (16-30) from downtown.
JBU won the battle on the boards 50-25.
HFB knocked down 36 percent (21-59) of their attempts, but struggled from long distance only canning 29 percent (7-24).
“I thought we did a solid job scoring in transition,”said Sheehy. “What we need to continue working on is our defense during the first five minutes of the second half.”
JBU opened the season on a lob play for Jackson via Rakestraw to send the toilet paper flying. A three pointer by Rakestraw on JBU’s next possession made it 5-2 JBU.
The Golden Eagles never looked back after that.
A trey from Allen at the 7:30 mark gave JBU their largest lead of the first half at 40-16. At 3:17 HFB managed to cut it down to 18, but JBU closed out thehalf on a 7-2 run to go into the break ahead by 23, 52-29.
With 8:12 left in the game, Hillsdale managed to climb within 14, 73-59, after consecutive threes from Chadd Gehrke, who finished with 11.
JBU quickly stepped up the defensive pressure and limited HFB to only eight points the rest of the way before closing out with the 29 point win.
JBU returns to action on the road Nov. 3 when they travel to Muskogee, Okla. to take on Bacone.
Game time is set for 7 p.m.
