WATTS, Okla. The Copan Hornets traveled to Watts Friday night for a showdown between two very championship bound teams.
The Engineers managed to take to the field and control the ball during the first half of the field, but it was the Hornets who took the lead at the end of the game, pushing the winning point over the Engineers and sealing their victory, 47-46.
The first half went well for the Engineers as they continued to keep the ball moving.
Small mistakes were made but it wasn’t enough to deter Watts from scoring.
Copan pushed hard, and managed to keep up with the Engineers tyingthem at half time.
When the second half began, both teams were sure they’d have the win.
Watts head coach Kelly Husted pushed his determined players and at the snap of the ball, they delivered.
At the end of the third quarter, Watts had managed to gain a 20-point lead over the Hornets, but Copan refused to give up.
The Hornets kept their line moving and before long they were only a touchdown behind. With under five minutes left in the game, Copan managed to make it into the end zone for a touchdown bringing the score to 46-46.
Rather than risk losing the two-point conversion, the Hornets kicked a field goal, bringing them ahead by one point.
The Engineers hoped torally back with two minutes left on the clock but the expected lead would never come. When the whistle finally blew, Copan had managed to derail the Engineers 47-46.
“Both teams needed to make plays. They just did it better.” Husted said.
Watts now drops to 5-4 as they take on South Coffeyville at home next Friday.
