The Interstate Commerce Commission approved a proposal to discontinue the “Southern Belle,” a passenger train that operated between Kansas City and New Orleans.

The Kansas City Southern Railway and its subsidiary, the Louisiana & Arkansas Railway, had applied to drop the trains, No.

1 and No. 2, more than a year prior, but the commission told them to keep the Belle running for at least another year.

In their second petition, the railroads cited continued revenue losses and patronage declines along the 393-mile route.

The Gallatin Fire Department took delivery of a brush truck and radio equipment and began training to establish the department.

At the time, Allen’s Canning Co. provided space in their country plant to store the truck until a fire station could be built to serve the community.

The Simon Sager cabin on the campus of John Brown University was designated as the birthplace of Sager’s youngest daughter, Amna Sager Chastain, wife of J.T. Chastain, a fourthgeneration Revolutionary War patriot. The designation was made by officials of the Daughters of the American Revolution. On hand for the special ceremonies were, Maggie Smith and Albert Sager, descendants of Simon Sager, and Mr. and Mrs. John Brown Jr.

Heidi Johnson cowered under a desk in the Columbine High School library on April 20 when two young gunmen stormed the building on a murderous rampage that resulted in 13 deaths.

On Nov. 10, the 17-yearold was scheduled to take time away from her junior year at Columbine to share her personal testimony of the tragedy to area youth at the Siloam Springs First Assembly of God Church’s weekly ROCK (Reaching Others for Christ’s Kingdom) House youth group event.
