— Powell Farm & Home opened its location in Siloam Springs two years ago this month.

Like other Powell Feed and Milling Co., Inc., locations found in Green Forest, Harrison, Yellville and Berryville, the local store provides customers with animal feed, supplies and equipment for livestock.

Upon opening its doors to the public the local store began receiving an outpouring of customers from Arkansas, Missouri and Oklahoma, said Jerald Southern, Siloam Springs store manager.

“We needed this store here because the old farmers Coop went out of business some years ago,” Southern said. “We just didn’t have what we needed here and there is such a large service area in need of the products that we offer.”

As promised by its Web site, found online at www.powellfeedstores.com, the Siloam Springs store carries a full line of feed, minerals, tack, supplies, fencing materials, lawn supplies, feeders, gates, panels, pet foods and supplies, hay, straw, corn, wildlife feeds and bulk seed by the pound.

Additionally, the store offers carry-out service and accommodates special orders.

“Customer relations is number one for us. Nothing comes before our relationship with the people we serve,” Southern said. “We’re tickled to death to be serving Siloam Springs. I just can’t say enough about the people in this part of the country.”

Hanging poultry feeders and nipples made to fit a bottle for feeding lambs and blankets for sheep are just a few of the offerings frequently purchased by local 4-H Club members and other youth showing animals at area and state livestock competitions.

“Our biggest customers are area beef producers — we get a lot of them in here,” Southern said. “We serve a lot of dairies but don’t really get much poultry business here at the Siloam store.”

Popular name brands including Purina Mills, Stockade, Country Vet and Diamond pet foods are just a few products offered by the feed and milling company.

Though poultry products are not in high demand locally, poultry trade was one of the first main industries that Powell was involved with when it first became a company in 1942.

Depending on industry supply and demand for certain services, products vary at the other four Powell stores across the state.

“We’re glad to be in Siloam Springs and we plan on serving the people here forever,” Southern said. “Our loyal following of customers will help us make that a reality. We’re already seeing different generations of families in our store here.”

Powell Farm & Home is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. Call 524-3511 for more information.
