— Siloam Springs Planning Commission approved a grocery store to be built across from Wal-Mart along U.S. Highway 412.

The significant development permit for ALDI Inc. was approved for 2802 Highway 412 East, which was formerly the Siloam Springs Housing Authority.

The building on the site would be torn down, according to the plans.

Commissioners approved the significant development permit Tuesday.

Siloam Springs Board of Directors must approve it Oct. 6.

ALDI has not yet purchased the property, saidMark Bersted, vice president of ALDI's Olathe, Kan., division.

Obtaining the appropriate permits is part of the due diligence process before the property is purchased, he said.

Plans show the store will be 17,886 square feet.

It will include 80 parking spaces.

Increased landscaping will be provided along the west side of the property, according to a planning staff memo.

The engineer for the ALDI store was to go before the Board of Adjustment on Aug. 25 because the plans initially showed more than one entrance from the highway.

The need for a variance was eliminated after the plans were reworked to have only one entrance.
