— Question: Athletes often give thanks to God for a victory or an individual superior performance. Isn't that rooted in arrogance, vanity, and selfishness? Why would God favor one sports team over another, and what does the Bible say about personal claims to God's influence?

Answer: The first scripture that comes to my mind is First Thessalonians 5:16-18. "Rejoice evermore.

Pray without ceasing. Inevery thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you."

Ecclesiastes 9:10 tells us to do everything to the very best of our ability. Scripture also encourages us to call on the Lord in every situation.

There are Christians throughout most vocations, and that includes sports - which takes us back to the game.

It is true that most competition is based on self-assurance, strong ego, and vanity; and all that is basedon pride.

But I know athletes who said: "I pray before our games. If I do my best to make a touchdown or hit a home-run, I am free to thank the Lord for keeping me safe, giving me strength, and helping me make the right moves. I believe there is nothing inherently wrong with that. It is putting the Lord first in my life."

I agree with that conclusion, but it does not guarantee a victory.

But does God favor certain teams? That is similar to asking, "Does God favor certain nations?"

When the Old Testament king and the people purposely honored and obeyed the Lord, God showed favor by giving them victory in battle and international status.

Therefore, I believe that if the coach and the team members purposely honorthe Lord in all that they do (and practice the game diligently), while the other coach and team dishonor God, God may favor the team that obeys him.

But again, that does not guarantee a win.
